Plastering services

A major aim of plastering is to conceal brickwork and ensure a smooth finish on internal or external surfaces.

Beyond its aesthetic appeal, plastering plays a key role in retaining warmth, reducing noise and protecting essential services such as pipes and electrical wiring. By sealing your walls, plaster also acts as a protective barrier against moisture and mold.

• Hairline cracking: Cracks between 1-5 millimetres in width or slight cracks are common. They are frequently attributed to ageing or the shrinkage of sand and cement undercoat. This can generally be filled and painted over.
• Large cracks: Larger cracks should be assessed as soon as possible. These could be a result of movement, ageing or vibration.
• Holes: Damage from nails, fixtures or accidental impacts
• Water Damage: Plaster affected by leaks or dampness.
• Loose or Peeling Plaster: Can be due to a range of factors such as poorly keyed undercoat, moisture ingress, use of wallpaper strippers or excessive heat.

• Skimming involves applying a smooth, even layer of plaster to existing surfaces. This is ideal for tired, worn or damaged plaster.
• Wet plastering involves applying a wet plaster mixture directly onto a wall or ceiling surface.
• Drylining is a method which involves attaching plasterboard to existing surfaces, followed by either a skim coat of plaster, or a taped finish.

Surface consideration: Plastering can only be as good as the background will allow. Any underlying issues that may affect the plastering work would need to be identified, and, where possible addressed before making good or applying new plaster for good quality results.

As plastering is a wet trade, furniture, carpets, curtains and other key belongings would need to be removed from the working area or adequately protected.

Radiators, wall heaters and items such as hand rails or other wall mounted items may need to be removed and refitted.

Drying time should also be anticipated and is heavily dependent on the temperature maintained.
